Mike Mastroberti is a Richmond, VA-based artist specializing in stoneware and wood. Growing up in southern Maryland near his grandparents, who were quilters, Mike was surrounded by artisan work and a collection of antique and traditional craft objects and tools, which filled both their home and his childhood home.
Mike began studying pottery in High School, completing an apprenticeship at a production pottery studio in Annapolis. He then continued his education at Virginia Commonwealth University, earning a BFA in Craft/Material Studies with a focus in Ceramics. Afterward, Mike worked in full-time production pottery studios (in Maryland, and later in Virginia) for nearly 5 years.
In addition to his pottery work, Mike held various construction and manufacturing jobs, including a position at a flooring shop in Richmond, where he began to learn woodworking. In 2020 he founded South Creek Studios, combining the ideals of traditional Craft and modern artisan manufacturing to create rustic, earthy pottery and wood pieces for the kitchen and home.
Every handmade piece at Alma’s is a story of its craft.
