Moniek Schrijer is a jewellery artist with a Bachelor of Applied Arts from Whitireia, New Zealand, who has exhibited nationally and internationally since 2004. She has earned several awards, scholarships, and residencies, including a prestigious Herbert Hofmann prize (2016). Her work is held in numerous collections in New Zealand, Germany, and France, including the Musée des Arts Décoratifs (Paris) and Die Neue Sammlung (Munich)
Moniek investigates the sublime qualities of craft and teases out simple gestures into complex expressions. Her work is distinct and inventive, weaving together wry humour, critical reflexivity, and technical originality.
She explores the duality of ‘jewel and object’ and ‘jewellery and the other’. Her current focus is on altering flat sheet metal, combining elements of light and texture to create pieces that evoke nostalgia, slippage and mystery. Inspired by physical and digital landscapes, her work bridges disciplines to expand the possibilities of jewellery and adornment art.
Every handmade piece at Alma’s is a story of its craft.
