Gretchen is in love with the quiet and small of the mundane. She makes functional objects that live in the slow of the everyday. A mug for your coffee, a bowl for your bananas, a small vase for your windowsill. These objects ask the user to push against the familiarity of the mindless daily action and instead be present, dwell, and find beauty. Through hand-production, contemplative making, and respect for design, Gretchen explores the intimacy and pace of quotidian through clay.
Gretchen is based in Richmond, Virginia. In 2018, she received a BFA in Craft & Material Studies and a BFA in Art Education from Virginia Commonwealth University. Her studio is located at Blue Dot Studios. In addition to a prolific studio practice, Gretchen also teaches high school art in Chesterfield County and numerous clay classes at the Visual Arts Center of Richmond. Mull isa big believer in drinking lots of coffee, cooking with more garlic than the recipe calls for, and tending to her ever-growing indoor plant jungle.
A note about Small Batch Production: Small batch production does not mean they aren’t hand made objects, it just means that the artist(s) are thinking of these as a part of a continual available product as opposed to being made in limited numbered runs or as a one of a kind piece. Due to the handmade nature of these products, each item in this small batch production line will be slightly varied.
