Beautiful Bodies rejects the idea that beauty exists only within a prescribed ideal

Alma's is thrilled to kick off the 2026 season of our annual summer series, Made In RVA, with this solo exhibition, Beautiful Bodies from Richmond artist Keira Maiden.
Keira is a ceramic, mixed media, and watercolorartist whose work is inspired by a life of scientific inquiry, global travel, and cultural exploration. Raised between Italy and the U.S., she brings a unique perspective shaped by diverse landscapes and traditions. Before pursuing art full time, she spent 16 years as a molecular biologist working in HIV research and 14 years in functional medicine. A competitive swimmer, lifelong musician, and avid traveler who has visited more than 60 countries across six continents, Keira draws on these experiences to create work that celebrates connection, curiosity, and the beauty of discovery.
Beautiful Bodies is a series that confronts society’s narrow and often unattainable standards of female beauty. By highlighting features that are frequently criticized, hidden, or deemed “imperfect”— different body sizes, breast sizes, asymmetry, scars, and other natural characteristics —the work challenges the cultural pressures that teach women to view themselves through a lens of judgment. Instead, viewers are invited to embrace the beauty in all bodies. Beautiful Bodies rejects the idea that beauty exists only within a prescribed ideal and instead celebrates the authenticity, individuality, and inherent worth of every body.
Exhibition Runs July 10 - August 8
